Haunted House Ideas
Haunted House IdeasCreating a haunted house is as adventuresome as scaring the kids once it is finished. The first step is to organize your thoughts by writing ideas down for a story behind the haunted house. (Of course this is not needed for a few props in your yard but a strong story can help large and small haunted houses.) In the entertainment industry, there is a story behind each attraction. If you write a short scary story about some event that happened in the past - i.e. Indian grave yard under your house, family murdered or whatever, you can base all your props, sounds and scary things off of this story. Now you don't have to tell the story to your trick or treaters to create a better haunted house, just use the story as a blue print to the haunted house. Don't put things in your yard that don't have meaning to your story. If you did have an Indian grave yard under your home you probably would not have vampires running around right? Unless they were in the story too. Did you know that the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland has a story behind it? You can read all about it at the Haunted Mansion Site.
Example haunted house storyline sent in by some Halloween Haunters in Florida:
Background Haunted House Story A vicious pirate captain named Prate conspired with a demon to become the richest and most feared pirate that ever sailed. Prate owned a slave named Kanazug whom he called Zug. Prate offered to sell the slave to the demon in exchange for riches. The demon agreed to put a Spanish gold ship in Prate's path, but told Prate that he would have to sacrifice his entire crew to keep the treasure. Pirate agreed to the deal, but Kanazug learned of this and warned the first mate. At first the mate believed that Kanazug was just being superstitious and foolish, but after Prate had cut out Kanazug's tongue and later Kanazug disappeared, the mate began to think otherwise. The easy taking of a Spanish galleon that caught on a sandbar convinced him that Kanazug had told him the truth. He warned the crew that Prate may try to betray them and when Prate insisted that they make landfall on All Hollow's Eve to bury the treasure, the crew mutinied. They beat Prate nearly to death and cut out his one good eye and cast it into the sea. They then set Prate adrift in a long boat and left him to his fate. Prate called on the demon again and swore that if he were given a thousand years, he would gather all of the crew's descendants for the demon's pleasure. The demon agreed to this saying that Prate would have to find his eye on his own and that if he didn't succeed in a thousand years that his descendants would be taken instead. Then the demon remade Kanazug into a hideous monster called "Zug-Zug" after the only words still left to the poor doomed slave and made him the guardian of Prate's eye which the demon had plucked from the sea. Prate had failed his promise once and the demon intended to make certain he failed again.
Haunted House Year 1 The first year the children were tricked by a witch into questing for Captain Pirate's eye and returning it to her. As she and Prate had guessed, Zug-Zug would not harm children (although he did scare the dickens out of them). The children believe that Zug-Zug is an evil monster and that Prate is their friend as he rewarded them with much candy for retrieving his eye.
Haunted House Year 2 Prate visits the children via a séance and asks them to help him retrieve some treasure stolen from his family. They quest again and although they never see Zug-Zug they do hear him occasionally. They find the treasure and return it to the witch. Unknown to the children, the treasure contains some magical items that will aid Prate in his evil plans.
Haunted House Year 3 The theme is quasi "Day of the Dead" and the children will be told by a Spanish mystic that they have done wrong in helping the pirate steal treasure and that they must now quest to calm the angry spirits. Zug-Zug will make another appearance this year, but this time he will be helping the children. The overall plot slowly unfolds.
Bravo! Just goes to show that you can even give your visitors a reason to come back every year.
