Make Yourself a Glowing Goblin: Glow Stick Technology Will Light Up the Night!
It is possible now through the development of the glow stick industry to deck oneself out from head to toe in chemical phosphorescence (which can make for an interesting Halloween costume.) A glow stick were originally created for use in military applications, and as usually happens with most government contracts once the application moved to the public sphere a lot of other really cool uses were found out for them.
Glow sticks have been adapted from lighting mechanisms to party gear and cloths wear. Its popularity is due in part to the fact that glow sticks produce a cool light, which is basically a light source that doesn’t heat up as the typical light bulb in your lamp does when it's turned on. The cool light comes from the interaction of two chemicals that are present in the glow stick. Before the glow stick is turned on these two chemicals are kept separate from each other. One chemical contained in a small sealed glass vial within the second liquid and both are inside the heavy plastic casing of the glow stick. To activate the glow stick, we all know that you simply have to bend the stick a little to break the vial so that the two chemicals mix and thus we have light.
Unfortunately a glow stick is not reusable and it is not recommended that you attempt to open a glow stick to get at the chemicals inside. After all, the glass vial inside can break very easily and cut your skin. Also do not attempt to drink the chemicals inside a glow stick. It is not worth it.
Glow sticks come in two forms, industrial strength and your average everyday consumer variety. The industrial strength glow sticks will last a lot longer and it’s possible to find some kinds that can last almost 24 hours. They typically last up to 14 hours and the consumer glow sticks will last between 8 and 12 hours.
