Grandmas closet: A Treasure Trove of Costume Ideas With Jewelry to Match!
BOO-hoo-hoo, it is nearly here… the ghouls and goblins are almost ready to haunt but it doesn’t have to haunt your pocketbook in the process. There so many resources that people don’t tap into when seeking out what to wear on Halloween.
The hardest part of Halloween is trying to decide what to be. I always found that hurdle to a little easier once I checked out what the stores were selling. Since you will only be wearing this outfit once, it doesn’t make a bunch of sense to pay through the nose for it. After you have decided what you would like to create, whether it is an old farmer, his scarecrow, cat or crow, it is time to stimulate the mind and get creative.
Grab a box… we’re heading for grandmother’s closet. That woman has everything. Old jackets and shoes and material… oh my. It’s a regular costume heaven in there: Nylons, old Avon products, shoestrings, elastic, wigs, skates, old toys, and more, you name it and it’s most likely there. Try to think outside the box. Cutting and ripping and sewing are not out of the question. Just because the jacket is too small doesn’t mean that something on the jacket won’t work.
Accessorize too. There can be brooches and badges and necklaces and earrings to look at. Outside you might find dirt and straw and stick canes that fit your idea. If you come to a point where all you are missing is perhaps one piece, brainstorm what might be a useful item for that piece. For example, if you need a red cape, look for a red blanket, some red material, an old red graduation gown or robe. If you can’t find red, get white and throw it in the washing machine with some fabric dye.
Not only is this activity mentally stimulating for the children as they think outside the box, it also creates fun family time that will create priceless memories as well. Great resources can be found at places that don’t cost too much money, including second-hand or thrift stores or the clearance aisles of your local department stores. I find costume seeking to be such an entertaining puzzle of hats, gloves and old stuff and also to be such a great pastime for children.
When decorating for a Halloween party, you need to keep in mind your crowd. If you have children for guests to your party, you need to make it kid friendly. This means plenty of snacks and good decorating. Use black, orange and green streamer spiraled together from the ceiling. Starting in the center of the ceiling, drape it to the top of the walls. This will create a festive tent effect. This decorating tip is great for those that want to have a “dance floor area” at their party.
