Halloween Party Decorating Ideas
Halloween Party Decorating Ideas
A Halloween Party is always more fun with scary haunted house decorations. A couple of really great haunted house props can give you a very impressive look. Here are some excellent ideas for making your Halloween Party Spooktacular.
To start with every haunted house needs a couple of rotting corpses and decayed skeletons. When making both the rotting corpse and the decayed skeleton you need to first purchase an inexpensive plastic skeleton to be the basic form of either project. For a realistic rotting corpse you can create muscle with expanding foam sealant. Next you will dip paper towel pieces into liquid latex that has been tinted with the rotting skin color of your choice with acrylic paint. Apply the pieces with a small paint brush till they conform around the paper towel pieces. You will want the paper towels to be plain white and smooth to get a realistic look. You can paint details on your corpse when the latex dries then powder it so it doesn’t stick to itself. For a decayed skeleton you will first need to paint your plastic skeleton with a mix of yellow and brown to give it that aged bone look. Next you can use either crepe hair or chunks of hair from an old wig and hot glue gun them to random spots on the skull. Use small torn pieces of wax paper and attach them loosely to your skeleton for the effect of decaying skin. You can use fake blood to give your decayed skeleton some extra detail.
A great fake blood recipe that you can use is one with no sugar and little food ingredients so it doesn’t attract insects. Mix 2 level teaspoons of all purpose flour with 1 cup water. Make sure water and flour is mixed completely with no lumps before heating the mixture. You will need to stir your mixture frequently while you bring it to a boil then simmer it for half an hour. Let your mixture cool and stir in any surface funk before mixing in the food coloring. A good blood food coloring mixture is 1 oz red color and 1/8 teaspoon green color. Stir flour base mixture with the dye mixture and use within a few days. This fake blood may temporarily stain your skin but seems to wash out of cotton material. If you were interested in making a blood like mixture you can drink (yes it will stain your mouth red) mix 1 can frozen white grape juice concentrate with 2 tablespoons of red food color and 1 teaspoon of yellow food color. Other fake blood mixes can be made by mixing corn syrup, chocolate syrup peanut butter and vegetable oil.
Another must have for a haunted house look is the tombstones. You can make a scene with your rotting corpses and decayed skeletons crawling out of their graves with a small pile of loose dirt in front of the tombstones. The easiest way to make tombstones is out of foam (packaging foam works great. You will need a large piece of foam that can be spray painted with grey and black paint (the spray paint will eat away at the foam and give it an aged stone look). Make an epitaph on your tombstone by using a sharp hobby knife to cut letters into the foam. If you want the letters to look smooth use a water based paint on them. To stand your tombstone up insert two pieces of ½” PVC vertically into the bottom of your tombstone. Next hammer 1/2” into the ground and slip you tombstone on. There are several easy things you can do to get great haunted house effects with items around your house. Make foggy windows by mixing a cup of Epsom salt with a small coffee can of water then apply the solution to either glass or plexi glass you want to give the foggy effect to. When you apply the solution it will just look wet but as it dries the salt stays for the foggy look.
You can apply a second coat for even more effect. Only use the solution on surfaces you want to remain frosted or you might need a razor blade to get the dried salt off. If you want a foggy look on your windows try rolled plastic its very quick and is easy to take down. Mirrors can create the look of water in a swamp scene or make a really great “endless hallway” effect by putting mirrors at each end adding a black light. Another great quickie idea is to put bubble wrap on the floor for the party entrance so as people step on them the popping fun begins. Make sure to use a heavy tape to keep it flat so no one trips and gets hurt. Hope you have a hauntingly good Halloween Party and with these great tips you should keep all the goulies happy (and scared)!
